100% Organic Easter Basket

Ok, so most of my posts have been about the heavy stuff-  chemicals are evil, curing cancer, etc... I thought it would be nice to post something lighthearted!

I have always enjoyed the Easter season. It is a time to remember what Jesus endured for us on the cross and to celebrate His resurrection. Now, I am not sure what an Easter basket has to do with Jesus saving our souls- but I do know I LOVE making Easter baskets! I've made one for Joel every year. Normally it would consist of the usual cavity combination- Reeses, M&M's, Jelly Beans, etc... This year, after having worked so hard to avoid refined sugars, a traditional Easter basket seemed rather counterproductive. So I set out on my quest to make a 100% organic Easter Basket!

I started my quest at Starbucks. I found RAW organic granola bars and a huge (manly) coffee mug. I continued my search for healthy goodies at Publix, where I found organic dark chocolate bars and organic fruit leather. One of my favorite places since Joel and I have changed our diet is Staff of Life in Niceville. They had a medley of organic candies: chocolate covered coffee beans, gummy bears, jelly beans, gum, chocolate bars, imitation M&M's, and licorice. All I needed now was some of that ever-annoying-find-it-for-months-Easter-basket-grass, so I ran to the dollar store. While there I found some fruit and vegetable seed packets for a garden. This was perfect since Joel and I recently planted a garden in our backyard!

The finished product isn't nearly as colorful or tasty as Easter baskets of the past, but I have to say I felt so much better giving Joel a basket full of health!

Ps- The Burt's Bees Hand Sanitizer is sort of a joke. Joel has this weird thing about shaking people's hands.

A Cure for Cancer?

After watching Food Matters, Joel and I stumbled upon another documentary called The Gerson Miracle. This film dealt more specifically with the body's capability to heal itself. According to Dr. Max Gerson, there is no disease your body can't fight off. There were multiple cancer patients being interviewed on this film- all had been healed by the Gerson Therapy. This documentary took hold of us. I know it sounds crazy to say there is a cure for cancer, but watch the film and decide for yourself. It's principals are simple:  proper nutrition, detoxification, and a chemical-free lifestyle.

Throughout our lives our bodies are being filled with a variety of disease and cancer causing pollutants. These toxins reach us through the air we breathe, the food we eat, the medicines we take and the water we drink. As more of these poisons are used every day and cancer rates continue to climb, being able to turn to a proven, natural, detoxifying treatment like the Gerson Therapy is not only reassuring, but necessary.
The Gerson Therapy is a powerful, natural treatment that boosts your body's own immune system to heal cancer, arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and many other degenerative diseases. One aspect of the Gerson Therapy that sets it apart from most other treatment methods is its all-encompassing nature. An abundance of nutrients from thirteen fresh, organic juices are consumed every day, providing your body with a superdose of enzymes, minerals and nutrients. These substances then break down diseased tissue in the body, while enemas aid in eliminating the lifelong buildup of toxins from the liver.
With its whole-body approach to healing, the Gerson Therapy naturally reactivates your body's magnificent ability to heal itself - with no damaging side-effects. Over 200 articles in respected medical literature, and thousands of people cured of their "incurable" diseases document the Gerson Therapy's effectiveness. The Gerson Therapy is one of the few treatments to have a 60 year history of success.

Joel is reading Gerson's book, "Healing the Gerson Way: Defeating Cancer and Other Chronic Illnesses". I haven't read it yet, as I am waiting for him to finish it, but of the few things he has shared with me I can tell it is directed mainly towards the people who are trying to defeat a chronic disease. Now, obviously Joel and I don't have any serious illnesses, but we don't want any either! We are seeking a lifestyle that would prevent cancer and other such chronic diseases.

Did you know it is illegal to treat cancer with nutritional therapy in the U.S.? The only legal forms of treatment are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Now why would that be? Could it be because the doctors, pharmaceutical companies, and health insurance companies don't make any money off of fruits and vegetables? It seems to me that our country has a big problem with greed... could this problem be hindering us from seeing the truth? What if the cure for cancer really does lie in our nutrition?! Isn't it worth looking in to? Joel and I think so.

How God delivered me from junk food

It's been 6 weeks since I've had any junk food or refined sugar. For those of you who know me well, you are probably wondering what kind of fad diet I'm about to share with you. But this is no diet. This isn't about losing weight or looking good. This is about my search for optimum health, physically and spiritually.

Joel and I have both been eating all organic, mostly raw, and somewhat vegetarian for 6 weeks now. As I am writing this, I am asking myself how on earth I can put into words the changes that have followed this calling to eat healthy. I guess I'll start with why. Why do we feel called to eat healthy? It all started with a documentary called "Food Matters".

"Let Thy Food Be Thy Medicine, And Thy Medicine Be Thy Food." - Hippocrates

That is the essence of this documentary. 'Food Matters' is a hard hitting look at our current state of health. Despite the billions of dollars pumped into the medical world on their so-called 'cures', we continue to suffer from a smorgasbord of chronic illness and diseases. Patching up an over-toxic and over-indulgent population with a host of toxic therapies and nutrient-deficient foods is definitely not the answer to this growing problem. So what is the answer? How can we find optimum health? The kind of health I believe God wants us to have? It lies in what we put in our mouths!

"You are what you eat."

How many times have we heard this little tune? We laugh it off with all the other things our mom's used to recite. But what if there's something to it? What if it's true that what you put in is what comes out? What if we really ARE the author of our own health? What if what we are eating is killing us? What if our bodies were never meant to encounter all of the chemicals and preservatives we find in our everyday foods and beauty products?

I believe there is an answer to these questions. I believe our health lies in what we eat. I believe that 85% of America's population doesn't have to die from some form of cancer. I believe God created a perfect mechanism when he created the human body. I believe He created it with the ability to heal itself- but only if we give it the chance.

This blog is about my and Joel's journey down the road to health. I will share our challenges, questions, conquests, and all of the things between. I hope and pray that this blog can be a place of encouragement for those of us who have struggles with our weight, our health and our self-image. God has something better for us! We need only to search it out!

More to come...

"And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food."
Genesis 1:29

"He gives power to those who are tired and worn out; he offers strength to the weak. Even youths will become exhausted, and young men will fall give up. But those who wait on the LORD will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.' Isaiah 40:29-31
